You said yes to eloping in Banff but now comes the question – What do we want to do? How do we actually plan the day? How much photography coverage do we need? Do we have enough time for everything we’re imagining? How do we create our perfect Banff elopement timeline?
As a Banff elopement photographer, I’ve helped dozens of couples build their perfect day, from quick intimate ceremonies at sunrise to multi-day adventures through the Canadian Rockies. The truth is, there is no “right” timeline, it all depends on the couple and the vibe they want for their day.
Before picking a timeline length, there are a few key factors that will shape your day:
- Locations – Banff has no shortage of breathtaking spots from Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, hidden gems along the Icefields Parkway. Some locations are a short walk from a parking lot and others require a multi-hour hike. The locations you choose will dramatically affect how much time you need.
- Hiking ability – Many of Banff’s most iconic spots involve a hike. Whether it’s a moderate walk or you want to summit something spectacular, build in the time.
- Season – Summer days in Banff are long while winter days are short. The time of year you choose affects how your timeline is structured around light.
- Getting ready– Are you doing hair and makeup in Banff? Will you get ready at your hotel or Airbnb? Build in getting-ready time if you want those intimate details captured on camera.
- Travel between locations – Distances in Banff can be deceptive. Always account for travel time between spots and then some.
- Your vibe – Do you want a slow, romantic morning with breakfast and champagne before your ceremony? Or are you up at 5am to catch an alpenglow on the mountain? Your vibe matters.

The 4-Hour Banff Elopement Timeline
Best for: Couples who want an intimate, meaningful ceremony without a full-day commitment. Great if you’re visiting Banff as part of a longer trip, traveling with guests who have limited mobility, or want to keep things simple and sweet.
What you can expect: One or two locations, a ceremony, portraits, and some time to just be together and soak it all in.

6:00 PM – First Look We meet at a private location where your partner sees you for the first time in your wedding attire.
6:45 PM – Ceremony
7:15 PM – Adventure!
8:00 PM – Golden Hour Send-off

- Choose locations that are close together or don’t require a long hike.
- Schedule your ceremony for early morning to avoid crowds and get the best light.
- Keep your ceremony intimate – this timeline works beautifully for just the two of you or with a very small group.
- Plan your celebration dinner for the evening so the day doesn’t feel rushed.
The 6-Hour Banff Elopement Timeline
Best for: Couples who want a little more breathing room – time to get ready, enjoy the journey, and not feel like they’re rushing between locations.
What you can expect: Getting-ready coverage, a ceremony with more relaxed portrait time, and two solid locations with time to explore and connect between them.

- A first look is a beautiful addition
- Use the in-between travel time intentionally: put on your favourite playlist, open a bottle of wine, hold hands and talk – this is your wedding day after all.
- If you’re heading to a busier spot, arriving before 9am is key to finding a pocket of the world all to yourselves.
- Consider a mid-morning picnic as part of your timeline – a blanket, some pastries, and a view is one of my favourite ways to slow an elopement day down.
The 8-Hour Banff Elopement Timeline
Best for: Couples who want a full, immersive elopement experience. You want the whole story told from getting ready to the last golden light of the evening. This is the timeline I recommend most for couples who want a truly comprehensive gallery and a day they’ll remember in vivid detail.
What you can expect: Getting-ready coverage, a first look, a ceremony, multiple locations, a mid-day adventure (hike, canoe, horseback ride), and gorgeous sunset portraits.

8:00 AM – Getting Ready at the Trailhead
8:30 AM – Start Hike to Parker Ridge, stopping along the way for portraits
10:00 AM – Ceremony & Private Vows

- Build a genuine break into the middle of the day. Eat something, rest, breathe. You’ll thank yourself later.
- The 8-hour timeline is where adventure add-ons really shine. Canoeing on Emerald Lake, hiking up to the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse, or exploring the Icefields Parkway. These elements make your day feel uniquely yours.
- Sunset in Banff is worth every minute of waiting. Even if you’ve had a long day, chasing those last golden rays is always the right call.
The Multi-Day Banff Elopement Timeline
Best for: Couples who want to fully immerse themselves in the Canadian Rockies. Multi-day elopements are for the adventurers, the romantics, the ones who want their elopement to feel like a real journey.
What you can expect: Two days of photography coverage across Banff (and potentially Jasper), multiple iconic locations, backcountry adventures, and a story that unfolds over time.
Why Choose a Multi-Day Elopement in Banff? Banff and the surrounding Canadian Rockies are enormous. There is genuinely no way to capture the full magic of this region in a single day. A multi-day elopement allows you to:
- Experience Banff in multiple types of light — sunrise AND sunset
- Explore beyond Banff into Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park, or Kananaskis.
- Slow down and actually experience your surroundings, rather than rushing from location to location.
- Create a richer, more diverse gallery that tells the full story of your adventure.
Sample 2-Day Elopement Timeline
DAY ONE – BANFF
9:00 AM – Arrival Portraits & Getting Ready in the Town of Banff
11:00 AM – Icefields Parkway Drive with Stops Along the Way
We head north toward Jasper, with stops at Bow Lake and the Crowfoot Glacier viewpoint.
1:00 PM – Ceremony & Celebration at Peyto Lake
2:30 PM – Portraits Along the Icefields Parkway
Tangle Creek Falls, Saskatchewan Crossing, and glacier views as we continue north. Every pullout is a potential stop for photos.
5:00 PM – Arrive in Jasper Check in, rest, and a celebratory dinner in town. You’re officially halfway through your elopement adventure.
DAY TWO – JASPER
6:30 AM — Sunrise at Pyramid Lake (A must-see)
9:00 AM — Old Fort Point Hike
12:00 PM — Maligne Lake & the Boat Tour to Spirit Island
3:00 PM — Explore Athabasca Falls
7:00 PM — Golden Hour in the Jasper Meadows
Pro Tips for a Multi-Day Elopement:
- Flexibility is everything on multi-day elopements. Weather in the Rockies changes fast. Having a loose plan with backup locations means you’ll always end up somewhere beautiful, whatever the sky decides to do.
- If you’re extending into Jasper, add at least one full day. Maligne Lake, Athabasca Falls, and the Columbia Icefield are not to be rushed.
- Multi-day elopements are perfect for couples flying in from abroad. It makes the journey worth every hour of travel.
How to Decide Which Banff Elopement Timeline Is Right for You
Still not sure which timeline fits your vision? Here’s a simple way to think about it:
- Choose a 4-hour elopement if you want something intimate and simple, you’re incorporating your elopement into a larger Banff trip, or you have guests with limited mobility or time.
- Choose a 6-hour elopement if you want getting-ready coverage and portraits at two locations without a packed schedule. This is a beautiful middle ground for couples who want more than a quick ceremony but don’t need a full day.
- Choose an 8-hour elopement if you want to wake up on your wedding day and feel like you have all the time in the world. This is my most popular timeline for a reason; it captures the full story without leaving you exhausted.
- Choose a multi-day elopement if you’ve always dreamed of an adventure elopement, you want to explore more of the Canadian Rockies, or the idea of slowing down and really living in this landscape for a few days makes your heart race.

The 6-Hour Elopement: The Full Experience
Best for: couples who want more locations, more story, and time to actually breathe
This is my most popular package — and for good reason. Three distinct locations, a mid-day celebration, and you’re still free by evening for a private dinner at The Juniper or Eden at the Rimrock.
10:00 AM — Morning Bridal Prep Portraits Documentary-style shots while you finish getting ready — details, laughter, quiet moments with the people you love most. These are the photos you’ll print first.
11:00 AM — Travel to Ceremony Location We drive up toward the Icefields Parkway, Moraine Lake Road, or Two Jack Lake. I scout ahead so you arrive to a ready scene.
11:45 AM — First Look & Pre-Ceremony Portraits A private first look moment, followed by portraits before vows — emotions are fresh here and the connection is at its most genuine.
12:30 PM — Ceremony Vows exchanged at your chosen landscape. A customized ceremony with your officiant, ring exchange, and personal readings if desired.
1:15 PM — Picnic Celebration Champagne, charcuterie, and a moment to actually be married. Take it in. Candid photos happen naturally here — some of my favourites from any elopement come from this part of the day.
2:00 PM — Second Location Portraits A 15–30 minute drive to a contrasting location — forest, alpine meadow, or river bend. Different light, different mood from the ceremony spot.
3:30 PM — Final Portraits & Wrap Last golden shots, final hugs, and you’re officially released to celebrate however you want.
Evening recommendation: Book a private dinner after. The drive back through the mountains in the last of the light, knowing you’re married — there’s nothing like it.
The 8-Hour Elopement: The Epic Mountain Day
Best for: couples who want a hiking ceremony, dramatic elevation, AND golden hour — the whole story told in one day
Fair warning: this one requires some fitness. The mid-day hike involves 300–500m of elevation gain. But the payoff? You’ll be exchanging vows somewhere most people only see in photos.
7:00 AM — Sunrise / Blue Hour Arrival Early start at Moraine Lake or Lake Louise before any crowds arrive. Mist on the water, glassy reflections, the kind of light that makes even phone photos look like paintings. Worth every alarm.
8:30 AM — Breakfast & Getting Ready Portraits Return to your accommodation. Breakfast together, final preparations, and relaxed documentary portraits of the morning ritual — the quiet before everything begins.
10:30 AM — First Look & Pre-Ceremony Hike A private first look, then a short hike to the ceremony location. Plain of Six Glaciers, the Sentinel Pass approach, and Rockbound Lake trail are all incredible options depending on the season.
12:00 PM — Ceremony at Elevation Vows surrounded by peaks, glaciers, or alpine wildflowers. The landscape is the décor. Your officiant can be present, or you can self-solemnize — both work beautifully in this setting.
1:00 PM — Mountain Picnic Celebration Packed charcuterie, good wine, your playlist playing from a small bluetooth speaker. Completely alone at the top of the world. This is the part people cry about when they look back at photos years later.
2:30 PM — Post-Ceremony Portraits & Descent Relaxed portraits as you hike back down — candid, joyful, unposed. Natural movement in dramatic terrain. Some of the most authentic images of the whole day come from here.
4:30 PM — Third Location: Valley Floor We drive to a lowland location for contrast: Bow River, Vermilion Lakes, or Banff Avenue with the Cascade Mountain backdrop. A totally different mood from the alpine shots.
6:30 PM — Golden Hour Finale Final magic-hour portraits as alpenglow hits the mountains. The last frames of your wedding day in the best light Banff offers.
Important: Build in a 30-minute weather buffer on any mountain day. The Rockies have opinions — and those moody, dramatic skies? Often make for the most stunning photographs anyway.
