Since 2023, Moraine Lake Road has been closed to personal vehicles, meaning visitors have only been able to access the lake through approved transportation options. How to Get to Moraine Lake
There are several ways to reach Moraine Lake.
- Parks Canada Shuttle
This is your most affordable option and works well if you are looking for a simple ceremony.
Important to Know: seats sell out quickly during peak season, so you’ll need to reserve well ahead of your wedding date. Your ceremony timeline should be built around your shuttle departure.
- Private Shuttle or Transportation
Many couples choose to book private transportation, as it offers more flexible pick up times, and there’s room for your wedding attire, bouquets, and personal items. It is also a great option if you are inviting guests to your elopement.
- Stay at Moraine Lake Lodge
One of the biggest perks of staying at Moraine Lake Lodge is that you can drive directly to Moraine Lake, without needing to book a shuttle. As a guest, you’ll also enjoy access to the lake outside of shuttle operating hours, giving you the opportunity to experience sunrise, sunset, or the peaceful early morning and evening hours when the crowds have thinned.
- Guided Tours
Some tour companies have licensed access to Moraine Lake and can transport couples as part of a sight seeing package. This is a great option for those that are combining their wedding day with exploring Banff.
When is Moraine Lake Open?
Moraine Lake is generally accessible from early June through mid-October, depending on snow conditions.
Outside of this season, the road is closed because of avalanche risk and winter conditions.
If you’re planning an early June or late September elopement, it’s always worth checking seasonal opening dates before confirming your plans.
Best Time of Day for a Moraine Lake Elopement
Sunrise is, without a question, the most magical time for an elopement ceremony.
Why? Because there are fewer visitors which allows for more privacy, and there’s soft mountain light and calm water reflections, meaning you can have the full Pinterest experience.
By mid-morning, Moraine Lake becomes significantly busier. During July and August, hundreds of visitors arrive shortly after sunrise, making secluded locations much harder to find.
How Early Should You Arrive?
For a sunrise ceremony, you should expect an early morning. Many couples begin their day between 3 to 4:30am, depending on the time of year.
Although the alarm clock will not be glamorous, the experience is unforgettable. Watching the first light hit the Valley of the Ten Peaks with almost no one around is something you’ll remember forever.
How Much Time Should You Plan at Moraine Lake?
I typically recommend spending 1.5-3 hours at Moraine Lake. This will allow for your ceremony, photos, exploring multiple view points, and being able to take your time without feeling rushed.
Many couples then continue the rest of the day elsewhere in Banff National Park for an additional adventure or a private picnic.
Where Can You Have Your Ceremony?
Moraine Lake is located within Banff National Park, so ceremonies must follow Parks Canada regulations. Small elopements are generally the best fit for this location.
Because Moraine Lake is extremely popular, it’s important to:
- Keep ceremony setups minimal.
- Leave no trace.
- Respect other visitors.
- Avoid blocking trails or viewpoints.
