How to Legally Elope in Banff: A Guide for Non-Residents
A lot of my couples coming to elope in Banff aren’t from Alberta, and some of them aren’t even from Canada! This raises an important question: how do you legally elope in Banff National Park?
I guide each and every couple that I work with through the process step-by-step, no matter where they’re coming from.
Here’s exactly what you need to know if you’re dreaming of running away to Banff together.
To ensure you have everything you need, take a peek at the link above or give your chosen registry a call.
You’ll also need to find an Officiant licensed in Alberta.
If you opt for one of my all-inclusive packages this is included and I’ll organize it all for you! If you go for my photography + planning packages, you’ll still get a list of recommended officiants for your ceremony.
You’ll need to have two witnesses.
These can be close friends and family that are with you, or I can sign and bring my assistant!
Tips for my International Couples
Another option for my international couples is to do all the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony when out in Banff. It gives a bit more flexibility and less logistics stress.
If you are traveling from outside Canada, make sure you:
Have a valid passport
Check visa requirements based on your country
Opt for travel insurance just in case!
While marriage in Alberta is recognized internationally, you may need to register your marriage certificate in your home country after. (Don’t worry I can look into this for you!)
First Time in Banff?
Here are my travel tips!
Calgary is the closest airport, so if you are planning on flying in – Calgary International Aiport (YYC) is the one you want! You will then need to drive about an hour and a half to reach the Town of Banff.
Plan to stay a few extra days. There is SO MUCH to do an see in Banff, and you definitely won’t get to everything your first time here. All the fresh air will take a lot more out of you, especially if you’re hiking, and you will want to plan to have some extra downtime.
Weather can be unpredictable! Make sure to pack layers and be ready for potentially colder temperatures than you expect. Have a back up plan in case of rain (or snow!).
Weekdays are less busy than weekends, and the early bird does get the worm (parking spots!) out in Banff!
All my eloping couples get travel guides before their day, so that they can do Banff with a local eye.
